L U C Y M O R N I N G S T A R BAND
Formed in Maui, Hawaii, the Lucy Morningstar Band is a blend of melodic soul and indie-rock, one where threads of folk, reggae and blues spiral throughout the free-flowing songwriting and instrumentation — a carefree and inclusive spirit and attitude that also radiates from the stage..
“Performing live is what has perpetuated my love of songwriting and propelled our band forward,” Lucy said. “As I continue making records and building my career as an artist, working with the right musicians accompanying me is essential. When we formed this band in Hawaii, a lot of new listeners were attracted by the authentic vibe of the music and our energy performing live.”
A lifelong musician, Lucy grew up with a multi-instrumentalist father, who was not only a composer, but also a teacher and performer. His deep love for the genuine power of live music the creative process set the trajectory for Lucy’s own melodic adventures and aspirations.
“He showed me music theory, gave me piano and guitar lessons, shared his recording studio and helped me get started engineering and producing my own songs,” Lucy said. “The toughest thing that has ever happened in my life occurred last year when he suddenly passed away. Being authentic to what comes naturally — whether that is happiness, pain, confusion, gratitude or any other emotion — is the best way I know how to write lyrics and melodies. Songs have always just come to me, playing in my head, as if I was channeling a message that erupted like a volcano through me.”
Coming in 2019, the Lucy Morningstar Band is tackling new challenges, pushing themselves into new directions and possibilities. It’s the simple notion of never stop learning, never stop evolving and honing your craft.
“It fulfills me to be able to cultivate joy and inspiration with my artistic vision,” Lucy said. “I believe there’s synergy and magic to being a part of a band and this group embodies the perfect balance of raw talent and true dedication.”
What has resulted from this current phase of the band is a new five-song EP. It was produced by John Avila, the bassist for Oingo Boingo, who also has sat behind the production controls for releases by Save Ferris and Reel Big Fish.
“John helped me to develop the arrangement in a way that brings each piece to a universal and uplifting place,” Lucy noted. “As a singer and guitarist, I’m learning to expand my horizons by listening to a variety of new music, playing more covers that speak to me and building my range vocally by working on different ways to perform songs and really connecting with the audience and what moves them.”
Aside from Avila, who played bass on the EP, drummer Anthony Logerfo (Lukas Nelson/Neil Young), keyboardist Alexander Burke (Billy Ray Cyrus/Save Ferris), guitarist Carl Harvey (Toots & The Maytals) and saxophonist Scott Page (Pink Floyd/Supertramp/Toto), among others, also contributed to the album.
“I’m grateful to have the people in my life who have shown me that they believe in what I do and push me continuously to keep working hard and getting closer to achieving all my goals,” Lucy reflected. “Being a musician is a blessing and something that also can be difficult at times. It’s often through our vulnerability that we find the strongest parts of ourselves. I feel that music has made me a more well-rounded individual and helped me get by in the hardest times — it’s truly been a force of positivity and endless awakening.”
